Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, is famous for housing the world’s largest population of the prehistoric-looking one-horned rhinoceros. Kaziranga is located in the state of Assam in India’s northeast area, thus it is a bit off the beaten path and a good destination for adventurous travellers. It is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, a region known for its diverse wildlife and unspoilt jungle paradise.

Kaziranga National Park – A Complete Travel Guide

The legends of the North East are legendary. Kaziranga National Park is no different. According to legend, a girl named Ranga from a neighbouring hamlet and a lad named Kazi from Karbi Anglong fell in love. Because the local village officials denied this union, the couple chose to flee. They wandered into the woods and were never seen again. As a result, the name Kaziranga Forest was born.

Another tale has it that Srimanta Sankardeva, a sixteenth-century Vaisnava saint-scholar, once blessed a childless couple named Kazi and Rangai. They were ordered to dig a large pond in the area as part of the blessing so that their name would live on.

Yet, the name Kaziranga Park could also be attributed to the quantity of Red Goats observed in this region. Rangai means “red” in Karbi and Kazi means “goat” in Karbi.

What to Do at Kaziranga National Park

Make a reservation for a vehicle safari around Kaziranga. The majority of visitors come to witness the one-horned rhinoceros, which flourish in the park’s swampy grasslands. There are, however, a variety of different species to view here. Because tigers live in the park, it is formally designated as a tiger reserve, albeit sightings are rare. Wild elephants, buffaloes, gaurs, monkeys, deer, otters, badgers, leopards, Indian pangolins, and wild boars are among the more prevalent species.

Also, there are more than 250 seasonal sources of water that draw migratory birds from far-off places like Siberia.

There are four distinct ranges in the park that can be visited, and each has its own headquarters. The grassy Central Range is the area that is easiest to access, while the Western Range, which is farther away and has the greatest concentration of rhinos, may be reached in 25 minutes. While they are significantly diverse in terms of topography and vegetation, it is ideal to try to see both the Central and Western ranges on a jeep safari. The Eastern Range, which is around 40 minutes away from Kohora, is famous for its numerous wetlands and birds, while it is also home to rhinos and other wildlife. The least frequented range and the only area of the park with hiking paths is Burapahar, where you may escape the throng.

In order to boost dolphin tourism, boat safaris are also run from the recently established River Tourist Zone at Bhomoraguri near Tezpur along the Brahmaputra River. The Burapahar range is around 30 kilometres away. The longest safari path, which travels into the Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary west of Kaziranga, is one of three available options.
